PRIVY COUNCIL RESERVES JUDGMENT ON BAHRAINI"S APPEAL
ReutersLONDON, Thursday 17 March 1960THE judicial committee of the Privy Council today reserved judgment in an appeal by Abdul Rahman al Baker, a Bahraini nationalist leader under sentence of 13 years imprisonment for charges including the attempted assassination of the Ruler of Bahrain and the British adviser, Sir Charles Belgrave.
Al Baker, who is imprisoned at St. Helena, appealed against the St. Helena Supreme Court"s refusal of a writ of habeas corpus for his release from the sentence. He contended that his detention on the island was illegal.
Al Baker was one of five men described as leaders of the National Union, arrested after disturbances in Bahrain in November 1956.
Respondents in the appeal are governor and commander-in-chief of St. Helena, Robert Edmund Alford, and senior Sergeant Patrick Vincent Truebody, superintendent of jails on the island.
With two other men, Al Baker was taken to St. Helena by a British frigate, following a sentence passed by a special court set up by the Ruler of Bahrain in December 1956. They had been charged with attempting to carry out the assassination of the ruler and Sir Charles, and the overthrow by illegal means of governmental control. The court sentence of 14 years imprisonment was reduced by the ruler to one of 13 years.
